I once hired a nationally-known comedian for a pharmaceutical corporate evening. Although we clearly discussed expectations and the "no blue material" basics several times, when he took the stage he seemed to ignore all of my requests. He not only used every swear word in the book, but also bashed a certain type of person that happened to include the majority of this pharmaceutical's target market, aka customer. I was never hired by that company again, and in turn I will never hire a comedian for a corporate event again. I will never know if he was aware of the far-reaching implications of his actions, or if he even cared. I know that this is unfair and there are plenty of talented, clean professionals out there, but the actions of one (as often happens) will stain my opinion forever. Thank you for a great article addressing this tough topic!
