The one thing that almost all social media networks now have in common is the ability for each user to upload an ‘avatar‘ or an ‘icon‘ that represents the user.

This little image – normally a square, cropped image – is what the users see whenever messages or status updates are sent. It should therefore be representative.

Seth Godin has written an excellent post about how to create the best representation of yourself online:

Seth’s Blog: The power of a tiny picture (how to improve your social network brand)

If you’re serious about socialising online, I highly recommend you make an appointment with a professional photographer & together create a small portfolio of close-up, 3/4 & full body photographs. You should be dressed professionally, as you wish to be seen in public. You won’t need to print them out, simple request a CD or have them copied straight to a flash disk. Some studios will offer to ‘touch-up’ your photographs; unless you’re familiar with professional graphics applications, I suggest you spend the extra money to have the professional make you look good.

Or watch this video to see how you can make a ‘manga’-style avatar without a photograph.

As suggested by my mentor, I used the 6 Power Poses to create a collection of photographs that I can use for practically any purpose. Some of them have been cropped for my avatars, others work well for printing. But the hour or so it took me to have the different poses caught on film has been well spent, as I no longer need to search to find an appropriate photograph for a press release, newsletter or blog post.

I can highly recommend Ant from That’s Me Photographic Studios.

Over the past 3 years, I’ve been increasingly requested to travel around South Africa for performances, workshops & seminars. In the past, I would arrive at the airport & wait 15 minutes to rent a car. If you often rent a car for business trips, you know that you need to hand over your drivers license, credit card, booking voucher & sign about 15 places on the form.

Well, I’ve discovered a really great secret about renting cars…

Firstly, where possible I only rent cars from Avis. Their service is superb & on the rare occasion that I’ve had a problem with the car, they are able to sort it out quickly & efficiently. They have rental offices at every airport & major city centres, & are able to do collections & drop-offs practically anywhere. The Avis Car Rental offices are always the nearest to the terminal building, which means I don’t have to walk far to pickup or drop-off the vehicle – particularly helpful if you’re in a rush!

But now I’m able to get my hired vehicle much faster.

A few months ago, I saw that Avis has a ‘Preferred Bookings’ counter. I made a few enquiries & was happy to find out that they have a super-dooper personal service!

Join the “Preferred Bookings” club by completing the application form (click to download the .pdf).

You’ll receive a “Preferred Bookings” club card & a unique “Wizzard” account number.

When you make a booking, provide your “Wizzard” account number.

Arrive at the airport & walk straight to the “Preferred Bookings” counter, bypassing the 50 people waiting in the queue (this is particularly true at “rush hour”).

Hand over your card, driver’s license & mobile ‘phone number.

Receive the key & drive off. NO SIGNATURES REQUIRED!

I now literally get my car in 5 minutes! That’s NOT an exaggeration.

The bonus is that you get much better rates that a ‘normal’ Avis rental – the “Preferred Bookings” rates are competitive even against the budget rental companies.

Plus you can link your rentals to either SAA Voyager Miles, BA Executive Club Miles, or even eBucks. In fact eBucks have recently launched an online booking facility on their website where you can spend your eBucks on Kulula air flights.

All charges are done straight to your nominated credit card, so you don’t have to take your company credit card with you. Your signature is on their files so you don’t have to sign anything!

Without a doubt, this is the fastest & cheapest way to hire a rental car & it’s highly recommended, even if you don’t travel as regularly as I do.

Inappropriate for corporate events

With so many year-end functions, Christmas ( X-mas?!) parties & corporate events happening around this time of year, I thought I’d share something that’s been irritating me. If you’re an event co-ordinator, or a party planner, you may have experienced this kind of frustration with corporate event entertainers before.

Occasionally I get the honour of sharing the stage with some of South Africa’s most well-know MCs, comedians, singers & other performance ‘artistes’, & so I relish to opportunity to watch their performances & learn from their experience & techniques. However, I find it absolutely shocking that some of them use foul language or risqué material at the most inappropriate times.

I’d agree that in certain circumstances this may be considered acceptable by the audience – comedy club audiences have completely different level of tolerance for sexist, racist or sexual jokes & material. But all performers at a client’s company event should be fully aware that they are not only damaging their own reputation (with potential repercussions) but the reputation of their client.

Corporate event entertainers are expected to assume that inappropriate language, humor or materials will not be tolerated; except under situations where the client’s representative has cleared this during the event briefing process. In my humble opinion, even performers – particularly comedians – who have become established because of their extreme behaviour should be very careful when they consider what material they will be performing.

Foul language is ‘easy humour’ – but a true professional understands that event is not ‘about them’ & they are not the main feature of the event. The client’s guests are to be treated with the utmost respect, since it’s because of the guests’ support that event is happening at all.

If you have had the misfortune of working with an entertainer that made you cover your eyes out of embarresment, or had to deal with guests’ complaints, please comment & tell me your story. Please do not mention the entertainer’s name: rather, let this be an opportunity to share your experience & what you learnt with other event planners & corporate function coordinators.

<!--intlink id="209" type="post" text="Why not see if your entertainment or speaker is a Professional Member of the Professional Speakers Association of South Africa (PSASA)?“–>

Focused on meeting your unique requirements?

Having recently purchased a laptop during my tour to India, I discovered that while it’s great to be able to use a mobile office, laptops aren’t necessary well designed.

So saw the Ergo-Tilt in the shop & figured it would be great because it has some amazing benefits:

It’s an ergonomically designed accessory that relieves stress by tilting your laptop. This tilt stops me from straining my neck & back because I no longer need to ‘hunch’ over the keyboard, as well as helping to prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (caused by nerve compression in your wrists).

The slots in the Ergo-Tilt allow air to circulate effectively around the laptop & since a cooler laptop performs better than a hot one, it improves my efficiency.

It’s extremely light, folds flat & fits in my laptop bag.

It’s durable & has a 5 year warranty (considering it’s made out of hard plastic, it’s unlikely break unless you apply too much force to it).

The packaging is made from 100% recyclable materials & the Ergo-Tilt itself is recyclable.

It comes in 5 colours (black, green, red, yellow & blue) & can be branded with your company’s logo & contact details, making it an excellent practical corporate gift.

It’s assembled by challenged individuals, giving jobs & hope to people who would otherwise not have much.

Best of all – it’s a South African product, so purchasing it supports local industry, it’s being sold overseas & a group of South African entrepreneurs own & run the company!

Well, I now highly recommend it – I bought one for my wife’s laptop too.

You can purchase it for about R80,00 at Game stores countrywide (don’t buy it from ‘Incredible’ – it’s R50,00 more).

Find out more about the Ergo-Tilt by going to www.ergo-tilt.com

[UPDATE: From Herb of Ergo-Tilt:

"Game will be upping their prices in a few days to R99,00 . Their R80,00 price was a clearout as they are about to receive our new designed retail boxes.

We are preparing a press release to show our new item & will keep you updated".

Thanks Herb, I'll post your update here.]

So here’s a couple of things that I can suggest to prevent potential problems while on business travel in South Africa:

For any travel outside of Cape Town, we use the reliable services of “African Chapter Tours“. They book all my flights, car hire & accommodation on my behalf & then send me 1 invoice. This means I receive all my required travel documents in one go, instead of trawling through 3 or 4 websites to make all my bookings. Their service is fantastic – I almost always get all my bookings by the end of the business day – & very definitely worth the nominal service charge they add.

Since most of South Africa’s airports are currently under construction for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, you’ll need an addition 30 minutes – so arrive at the airport at least 90minutes before your flight. Rather arrive too early & have a cup of coffee!

Many South African airlines no longer accept your driver’s license as positive identification, so make sure you have your green ID book or your passport with you.

Use a Luggage Glove. Not only does it make your luggage easier to see on the conveyor belt, it also puts an extra layer of security around the contents of your bag.

Request a GPS when you book your car – you can’t “prepay” for it, you’ll be paying when you actually receive the unit. Where possible, get a Garmin nuvi – the interface is the easiest to use. Rates vary (Vodafone rentals is currently holding a special of R29,00 / day)

Be aware that vehicle hire companies require a fuel deposit, so make sure there are enough funds available on your credit card for the ‘hold’ amount.

Join the relevant ‘frequent flyer’ club – they’re free & if your flight is overbooked, the airline upgrades you according to your mileage status.

Be friendly with any staff you may encounter – charisma & a smile can go a long way. I get much better service when I greet each person I meet & give them something to smile about!

If you want to leave the aircraft quickly, try to get a seat as far forward as you can & along the aisle. This makes it much easier not only to get off quicker but you won’t need to climb over everyone if you need to take your laptop out of the overhead compartment.

Always carry a book: you never know when you’ll be delayed & will need to pass the time.

Get a PowerMonkey – this amazing little charger will let you charge just about any mobile device, without needing to be plugged in. I now only carry 1 charger for my cellphone, iPod & Palmtop. The PowerMonkey comes with a cable to allow you to charge it from the laptop’s USB port.

If you’re staying in accommodation & want privacy, give the person who cleans your room a big tip before you leave & request that they leave your room – you can always ask the reception to deliver clean towels when you’re there. Leave the TV on with the volume up & put the ‘Privacy’ sign on. This helps to decrease the chances of anyone coming into your room (but use the safe if necessary).

These are just a few suggestions but I will be posting some more tips in the future.

If you have any other suggestions, please share them with everyone by adding them in a ‘comment’ below!
